Advantages and disadvantages of magnetic materials

The different magnetic materials have specific properties such as the magnetic flux density (Gauss), the demagnetization resistance, the maximum power, the temperature coefficient and the maximum operating temperature.

Neodymium magnets and other magnetic materials

Permanent magnets are necessary and are used for a variety of purposes in industry, home and other private sectors. Permanent magnets perform closing functions, as in refrigerator doors. Even in smaller electric motors, such as the windshield wiper motor or the window motor. Permanent magnets and their magnetic materials are divided into four different categories. These are the magnetic materials:

  • Neodymium (NdFeB)
  • Samario Cobalto (SmCo)
  • Alnico
  • Ferrite or ceramic

In different industrial applications we can find permanent magnets, especially in separating and recycling functions. Other fields of application of permanent magnets are in the electronic sector in loudspeakers, televisions, telephones, radios and videotapes.

Advantages and disadvantages of Alnico magnets and other types of magnets

The different magnetic materials have specific properties such as the magnetic flux density (Gauss), the demagnetization resistance, the maximum power, the temperature coefficient and the maximum operating temperature.

 magnetic materials

1. Advantages of Neodymium Magnets (NdFeb)

  • Neodymium magnets have the strongest magnetic properties per unit volume. Its attraction is approximately 1,000 times its own weight.
  • The neodymium has a very high resistance against demagnetization.
  • Neodymium has a very high ratio of magnetic effect to volume or weight.

Disadvantages of Neodymium Magnets

  • Neodymium magnets can only be used up to a relatively low operating temperature of 80°C.
  • Neodymium has a low resistance to corrosion. Therefore, magnets made of neodymium should generally be coated.

2. Advantages of Ferrite Magnets

  • Ferrite magnets can be used up to an operating temperature of 300°C.
  • Magnets made of ferrite have a high resistance to corrosion.
  • Ferrite magnets have good magnetic stability.
  • Ferrite magnets are cheap to manufacture.

Disadvantages of Ferrite Magnets

  • Ferrite generates a relatively weak magnetic field as a magnetic material. This means that the magnets made of ferrite must have a relatively large volume to achieve the necessary efficiency.

3. Advantages of Samario (SmCo)

  • Samarium magnets are somewhat weaker than neodymium magnets, but still have a relatively high magnetism.
  • Samarium magnets have a high resistance to demagnetization.
  • The magnetic material of samarium has a good power / weight ratio.
  • Samarium magnets have a temperature resistance of up to 250 ° C.
  • Samarium has a high resistance to corrosion

Disadvantages of Samario magnets

  • Samarium magnets are relatively expensive to manufacture.

4. Advantages of Alnico magnets

  • Alnico magnets have a very high operating temperature of up to 525 ° C.
  • Alnico magnets have good corrosion resistance.
  • Alnico magnetic material has a long-term magnetic stability.

Disadvantages of Alnico magnets

  • Alnico has little resistance to demagnetization. If two Alnico magnets come together too close to each other, both can be permanently damaged.
  • Alnico magnets are relatively expensive to manufacture.

From the list of different magnetic materials with all their advantages and disadvantages, it is clear that it is important to observe exactly where and under what operating conditions the magnets are used and used. Also the geometric design of a magnet has significant effects on the formation of its magnetic field. This refers particularly to the direction of their magnetic field lines.

Suppliers of all types of magnets

The field of magnetism is extraordinarily diverse and, in all its effects, can not be explained in a few words. The numerous applications of permanent magnets often require that the magnets are planned and designed geometrically for specific applications. ImagnetShop can provide a wide range of products with different solutions.

Complex problems require thoughtful solutions that not only touch the central areas but also solve them in the long term. Sometimes, such a solution requires a flexible magnetic material, such as magnetic tape. For any magnetic problem, ask for our help.
